we played a lot of good teams. 8-5 going into SEC play

....is horrendous. Give me a break...LSU has at least equal or superior talent to four of the teams they lost to in OOC play. The one good OOC team that beat LSU trailed by 15 points with just 10 minutes to go in the game.

Play during the OOC schedule is the very reason LSU may miss out on postseason play entirely this year.

beating Kentucky was a good win...even if they aren't as dominant as they have been in the past

This is the best Kentucky team since 2020. Plus they’ve won 7 out of their last 8 (only loss was at LSU) with wins at Auburn and at Tennessee and a blowout at home vs Bama.

It was a big win any way you look at it.

You act like you’re not discounting the Kentucky win, but you actually are.

Outside of the Wake Forest and Dayton games, LSU was terrible in the non-conference. They became a good team in SEC play. Program is headed in the right direction.

I don't think I'd go quite that far. The 2021-2022 UK team was a #2 seed (who was upset by St. Peter'...who ironically also ended McMahon's Murray State's team's run in the tournament). That team was better than this Kentucky team...even though this team might go further in the NCAAT.

Still, no one should discount the win.

"Good" is relative. But they certainly became a better team. No one can rationally dispute that.

We all hope so, but things can change rapidly in this age of college basketball. Where the program is headed will depend on who McMahon can retain from his current roster and who he can add from the portal. Optimistically, LSU takes the next jump up like Florida did this season. But if the roster is gutted, they could be looking at a significant step back like Vanderbilt took this year after having a better conference performance last year than LSU did this season.

It's too early to make any predictions about next year's team.

He’s shown he’s a good coach. Time to pull in some talent.

He's a good coach.

We went 9-9 with a mid-major frontcourt outside of Reed. Dean and Baker are serviceable, but in no way are either remotely close to All SEC level.

You start getting some good players as starters, and keep pulling the Deans and Bakers as your backups, and find the 1 guy who can take over most games as the lead scorer, they will start winning 20+ games and make the NCAA's.

The Kentucky game just shows what this team should’ve been and wasn’t.

A home blowout to Miss St and a loss at 12-seed Arkansas say something different about this team.

The game against State was tied before Tyrell Ward got hurt, and State was the betting favorite.

Arkansas was favored that game, and they are much more talented than their record suggests. They were a lock for the NCAAT if not for their terrible locker room issues.

So, those losses don't really say anything different about this team. We all know State is a defensive stalwart and that Tyrell is one of our best scorers. Getting past that defense without him would have been nigh impossible. Arky is a good team despite their record.

Don't really think losing games where you're not favored to win is indicative of this team's character. If anything, winning games where we're the underdog and coming back from double digit deficits does.

I agree McMahon should be given credit for this year's SEC record. Next year is going to be another throw of the dice to see if he can replace key players from this year. But I still have to question a lot of his in game moves. This game it was very apparent that the starters weren't getting the job done except for Hannibal and Ward. They were showing no fire or concern and seemed to be just going through the motions. Lots of sloppy play which resulted in turnovers. We substitute Williams, Dean in and things are turned around with some direly needed shooting, rebounding and better care of the ball. And then what happens? For no reason that I could see he takes out Williams and Dean and puts the starters back in. Slowly but surely we see a 21 point lead whittled down to 3. Why, why, why?
