Last night's game reminded me of something CJJ said

After the second WF game going into the Skenes v Lowder game Jay Johnson said:
"We expect to be playing important baseball in June, and we play every game like we're playing important baseball in June. The Tuesday on March 22nd against McNeese is a playoff game to us."

Championship mindset. Different from the last regime

Lots of respect for Mainieri but it’s kind of crazy to look back at how he didn’t take mid week games seriously. Can you imagine BK or Saban not taking a bad non conference game seriously? Or Bill Self telling his bball team that it’s OK to not try hard against a cupcake team?
It’s nice having serious people coaching now.

I was thinking about that same quote during the game. In reality, midweek games don't mean jack squat for the team's tournament seeding. But it does have an effect on the team mentality and getting into that championship mindset.

Get your point, but baseball is completely different. You can’t really throw your best every night. Football is 100% and 100mph every play due to the lack of games.
It’s nice to see some quality depth from CJJ and staff.

Comparing football/basketball to baseball midweek games is apples to oranges. But I love Jay's mindset, everything matters.

Eh, Mainieri had one or two years with no losses in midweek games and Johnson actually punted on a conference game last year only down two in the 5th inning. There’s a lot of other things that put Johnson ahead of Mainieri.

But whoever is out there better be playing their best, that’s why they are on the team.

Mainieri didn't take the result seriously, he would just try to let his pitchers work through tough spots for too long, and he would try to get the younger players more playing time.
JJ takes more of an MLB approach to it, where the starters are every day players but will get rest days. But he wants to win every single game.

I'm not a well versed baseball guy but the year Paul had no leftie pitching seemed insane to me at the time

I think the point has been missed. Mainieri did not have the pitching depth to take midweek games seriously. In most CPM seasons, we had one bona fide starter, another with the stuff who was struggling with consistency, and then we pieced together Sundays. Come midweek it was Johnny Wholestaff.
CPM was a great coach, but he ran out of energy in 2010.

It also helps that we have at least four or more legitimate starting pitchers. Been awhile since we've had this much depth in the pitching department. Anderson was very impressive. And we won a championship with what was supposed to be a very week bullpen.
But on a side note, sec looks stronger this year. Our pitching dept is very needed.

Didn’t he go undefeated in midweek games in his last season? Genuine question, why do you say he didn’t take midweek games seriously?

That USF game last year where they played musical QBs kinda gave me that vibe.

Because for some Rantards, it's sooo cool to shite on former coaches.

quote:Which is how he thought he was best preparing his team. There is something to be said for letting pitchers work out of jams, and for getting younger guys reps. One can disagree, but many coaches do it this way.
