lol, seems like French isn't the only thing they are failing to teach. In Rome government and religion were the same thing. Emperors were deified and had cults that worshiped them directly. They tolerated other religions, insofar as you also did your duty to the state and participated in the mandated state religious practices. This is what caused the conflict with the Christians. They wouldn't do it and were seen as seditious to the government of Rome. That had nothing to do with the fall of Rome, it was that way since the early days of the empire as it rose.
