I had an area like that. I got it covered in artificial turf. Some of the options these days are not terrible. Mine was laid out such that I could define the area so it doesn’t look terrible when it transitions back to natural grass. It’s got a rock base and you can spray it off. Surprisingly it doesn’t really smell like dog piss with regular rain or hose. It’s made a huge difference. No more mud right off my porch. I do have to regularly pick up the dog crap. It’s about three years old now and held up like the day it was installed. I can’t remember what it cost but worth every penny to solve the problem.
