PC abided. He recognizes that LSU won the BCS NC fair and square.

2) As soon as the final results were announced, selecting OU and LSU to play for the BCS NC, Pete Carroll and every USC fan around started crying like babies about the decision.

Incorrect. PC did not lay claim to the BCS NC nor did any SC player or fan. PC did not claim that USC should have the BCS title. He said he thinks his team just won a NC, but will have to wait to see until [polls are out]' He also said he would rather not foucus on that but instead his team's victory in the Rose Bowl. He and everyone else who understand the BCS knew that the AP poll is comppletely distinct, even though it was a part of the BCS formula, and would result in a NC that may or may not be the same as the coaches' poll NC.

quote:

4)USC beat Michigan (ranking?) and claims NC.

#4. They did not "claim" a NC. They were legitimately the AP NC's. #1 is polls before bowl season. Beat #4 handily. Stay #1 in AP.

quote:

Also, everybody harps for a playoff series, including USC. But do you know that the major reason that we cannot have a playoff system right now is because USC, the PAC 2 and the Rose Bowl will not agree to it.!!

Pretty funny, given the in the 2007 SEC spring meeting, they SEC unanimously voted to keep the status quo (BCS) and did not support a playoff.

quote:

So it goes deeper than just 2003. It continues today and I do not see it going away any time soon.

Yet for some reason it started in 2003 and continues (your post also supports that notion)

quote:

USC - they win their championships in the newspaper
LSU - we win our on the football field

ACtually, the two teams in the BCS CG are voted to play in that game. ANd the winnder is voted NC by the coaches.

GO WINNDERS!!!

I hated SC in 2003 for well, 2003. But now I just root for them to lose cause I like powerhouses to be upset by other teams.

Really the USC bashing has died down a lot recently. Especially since we have won that second BCS title.

The only thing that still gets my goat about 2003 was the fact that two coaches voted USC #1 in the coaches poll. I wonder if one of them was Pete?

Other than that, I could give a damn.

You want to know what I'm tired of the USC plays nobody argument? BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO CONTROL OVER HOW GOOD THEIR CONFERENCE OPPONENTS ARE! You can make the argument that the Pac-10 isn't a good a league as the SEC, but has it dawned on anyone that perhaps USC is THAT much better than their conference opponents?

I think that Carroll's first 8 seasons speak for themselves.

31-8 versus Top 25 opponents
5-1 in BCS games
7 straight BCS games (including this year)
7 straight conference titles
7 CONSECUTIVE 11 win seasons

Not to mention, Carroll has had the Trojans finishing in the Top 5 in the final rankings in the last 6 seasons.

I'm not a USC fan, never claimed to be. But all this "USC plays nobody" banter is a joke. That explains the home & home with Ohio State, right?

Yes. It wasn't LSU fans upset about who they played but rather waiting 45 years for a national title and then everyone forgetting LSU won it when USC was going for their 3rd straight.

Exactly!!! I'm over it now, but I admit that it took awhile. What infuriated me was that the media was so damned adamant in their self-righteous protests that they created the perception that LSU were illegitimate champions. In one case, a newspaper columnist, less than two years later, even forgot that LSU had made it into the game.

this time, the angst might involve more than one team, as was the case the past two years when Auburn and LSU, respectively, were left out of the big game.

Now please don't e-mail this guy, as this article is more than three years old. If I had been posting on the Rant at the time I would have certainly posted it and called for him to be flooded. But I e-mailed him at the time and ripped him pretty good and to his credit, he responded and was very contrite and admitted he had done a bad job and dropped the ball.

The only reason I'm posting this article now is to illustrate just how buried LSU's championship was when a newspaper columnist prints a piece about them being left out of the championship game less than two years after being in and winning that game.

Texas beating USC was absolutely HUGE in helping to turn that tide a little bit. Now that we won again last year and became the first team to have two crystal balls, all is pretty much well.

In case some of you do not remember the 2003 NC sequence of events, which will help you understand the resentment of LSU fans toward USC, Let me refresh your memory with the following:

1) before the final BCS standing was announced, all 3 coaches involved, Saban, Carroll and Stoops, got on national TV and said that they would abide by the decision of the BCS no matter what the result.

2) As soon as the final results were announced, selecting OU and LSU to play for the BCS NC, Pete Carroll and every USC fan around started crying like babies about the decision.

3) LSU dominates OU in the NC game, much greater than the score indicates

4)USC beat Michigan (ranking?) and claims NC.

MY opinion - USC had a very legitimate claim to have been in the 2003 NC game. I still do not understand how a team that loses it´s conf championship (OU) can be considered for the NC. But keep in mind the PAC 2 does not play a conf championship, therefore plays 1 less quality opponent each year than the coneferences that do play a Conf Championship game. EVERY Tiger fan would have loved for them (USC)to have been in the game as we would have beat their butt as well, particularly with the dominating defense we had in 2003. USC had never faced a D like that one. But the fact is that by acting the way they did (USC)showed a lack of class. They did the same thing in 2005 when Texas beat them fair and square and then Leinart came out and said that USC was still the best team despite the defeat. In 2004, Auburn had a legitimate claim to a place in the NC game but you did not see Tubby act in any way like Carroll did in 2003. Unquestionably USC has a supremely successful program but show a lack of class on a consistent basis. Simply put - they run their mouth too damn much.

Also, everybody harps for a playoff series, including USC. But do you know that the major reason that we cannot have a playoff system right now is because USC, the PAC 2 and the Rose Bowl will not agree to it.!!

Last rant, uh I mean comment, the people from Louisiana and California have differnt philopophies and outlook on most things, usually diametrically opposed. Many California people (although not all), and I work with a bunch of them, are "elitists" and consider Louisiana, and most of the South, nothing but uneducated hicks.

So it goes deeper than just 2003. It continues today and I do not see it going away any time soon.

USC - they win their championships in the newspaper

LSU - we win our on the football field

There is almost nothing accurate in this post. I'm not going to dissect each point, since another poster has already done this but...

What do you mean they all agreed to abide by the results? This implies there was some sort of choice. Did this mean that coaches agreed that the one left out would not crash the BCS title game?

The AP NC has nothing to do with the BCS. I'm not sure why this is so difficult to understand.

I think the USC thing has died down a little.
LSU fans for the most part respect what that program has done and if your a college football fan you have to respect that.
Do agree with OU - tired of them getting the benefit of the doubt. Texas had as good a argument as them.
Its all perception and that's why for the sake of the SEC, Florida needs to win in order to keep the SEC at the top of the pecking order.
Most people agree it should have been USC LSU but the media discredited everything LSU accomplished that year. LSU did win it last year so that helped also.

Could you imagine Bama being involved in something controversial and getting left out - media made fun of lsu fans, imagine the outrage if Bama is left out like Auburn or has a three way controversy.

The LSU hatred towards USC has died down but was embarassing for a while. LSU fans have an inferiority complex. The current obsession is Saban/Alabama, with occasional mutterings about ESPN and CBS and Lou Holtz.

Anyone in college football using the media to whine about the perceived potential injustices / lobby for a better position (read: Pete Carroll, Mack Brown) generally puts me off. Agree on the rules, play your damn games, and STFU.

So anyone that compliments their own team when asked a question without tearing down another team (which is what PC did) puts you off? You consider that whining?

Personally, I would want a coach that supports his team (once again while not insulting other teams). It's a very flawed system that leaves the door wide open to the type of stuff that puts you off.

What would you do or say if put in the same situation as M. Brown or P. Carroll?
