After a certain year, most models require a car locksmith or a dealership. The car companies are doing everything they can to ensure a vehicle's owner can no longer perform maintenance themselves.

Don't be so dramatic. The key fob is a physical control that grants access to a 50K+ vehicle.
The encryption methods and control of them has changed over the years, but it's not auto companies being unreasonably greedy. Kia has looser controls, and that has government going after them for too loose controls to start a car.
