I did my work at Lakefront NOLA (KNEW) and really believe that having the Tower / Controlled factor early made it easy to get a handle on my radio work. You can typically tell a pilot that did not train at a controlled airport when they get on the radio with the Tower.
I performed most of my maneuvering work in the "Practice Area" (East of I-10 Twin Spans), but did tons of TNG's in Slidell (KASD) and Picayune (KMJD)--both of which are uncontrolled--but always flew into and out of KNEW.
