I had a similar issue where the trough had ice in it and it eventually stopped making ice. I assumed the water supply valve had a slight leak that allowed water to drip and slowly freeze and build up. I have hard water at my house and have had to replace washers on faucets due to calcium deposits. I replaced the valve assembly and that fixed it. I was also having drips at the cold water tap and that fixed it also. Valve assembly replacement is pretty easy
