I have no doubt that innocent people have been executed in this country. Based on the number of people that have been exonerated by DNA testing, probably quite a few innocent people have been executed over the years. The death penalty in theory is solid. An eye for an eye, that sort of thing. But like anything, the government will frick it up.

Incompetent, overzealous, and/or outright dishonest cops and prosecutors are not exactly unheard of.

One can support being tough on crime but not be in favor of the death penalty.

Just based on my moral beliefs, I don’t want to be responsible for the state murdering an innocent person. I am all in favor of murderers and pedophiles getting a bullet in the head. I just don’t trust the government to get it right.

I’ve long offered this compromise to opponents…..the death penalty can only be used in 100% clear cut and dry cases, where there is some type of hard evidence the criminal is guilty. That would also mean swift justice and only 1 appeal.
