Many crops, especially rice, cannot tolerate any salt. Once the salt water gets in the field the salt binds with the soil and can take years to flush out.

You may have heard of conquering armies salting the land so enemies could not grow crops (Romans and Carthage). Not sure how much crawfish they ate in Carthage…

Yep that’s the problem with taking a chance and pumping saltwater on your fields. It has a long lasting effect even when you get plenty of rainwater to flush the bayous out, if the saltwater leeches into the ground that ground is ruined a for a while.
