Fortified Roofing Questions

Looks like I'm getting a new roof put on by Pelican Roofing. Does anyone have any experience or advice, especially when it comes to the 3 options of taped seams, or full water and ice?

I'm a fan of the water and ice over everything, but I suspect it will be much more expensive. Just got the verbal green light from Farm Bureau. Pelican tells me fortified is $105/square more. I don't have an idea how many squares I even have at this stage. (dude from the ground ballparked 30)

Any other tips for anyone who has gone through the process? Getting ahead of installation to make sure all the inspections or whatever take place?

Rajun, just curious on how the contractor selection process plays out. What made you select pelican proofing before these questions were answered?

In my case, eager beats pretty. I recently did some research on the Fortified grant program, and looked at the list of approved installers in the BR Area. They were on that relatively short list. They seem to come highly recommended here (just search for 'pelican" in the home board).

AND... Garcia has recently done work for me. They put in extra vents this summer and repaired/rebuilt my chimney 3 weeks ago. In the chimney repair process they damaged my shingles where they put their ladders.

They've dodged me for 7 days trying to get someone to come look at my damaged shingles. IF they had come out and fixed the $100 screw up, they'd have likely had the contract.

They skated me and managed to hide their way out of a full roof job.

There are many other things that go into the taping the seams vs ice and water. The felt is laid differently. Drip edge nailed differently. Decking must be renailed. Lots and lots and lots of pictures must be taken. Evaluator must be aware of the process and oversee things.

Curious…which farm bureau office are you with?

Ascension.

Yeah I’ve read a good bit on the “extras” on the fortified standard but I missed the fact there are 3 options on the deck sealing. Sounds like the Pelican std pkg for fortified is taped seams and 2x synthetic felt (going from memory at the moment)

I had thought it was 100% water/ice for all fortified standards but reading more that was just my misconception.

Apparently Pelican was the first in the state to offer it. I suspect they know what they’re doing. Unfortunately it seems somewhat new to FB. I’m more concerned with THEM getting what they need to be happy. It saves me enough to be a no brained. Just trying not to screw it up

There are several of us in the area that are fortified certified. Ascension is one of the FB offices I haven’t made it in yet. 2 local offices send me a majority of their roofs. I actually just did a sit down presentation with 1 last week with their agents and top dog to help them understand the process.

Did you get one of the slots for the LDI fortify grants? Or you paying out of pocket? Update us along the way because it’s something I was looking into.

Unfortunately this isn’t a grant. I learned about the Fortified standard about a year ago and watched their videos/read pdfs. Just trying to learn in case the opportunity arose to change the roof.

A hail storm went through Sunday/Monday and a few roofing companies came through. Pelican was convinced I had enough damage to qualify for insurance. So I filed a claim but was honest that I was uncertain.

Yesterday I had more questions for Pelican and had him come back (a 3rd time). He happened to show up at the same time as my adjuster.

Long story short. She didn’t really find a lot of hail damage but enough wind damage to qualify. (I should have called after our last decent hurricane but thought it was fine)

Can’t say enough good things about Farm Bureau. I pay a bit of a premium but they are very easy to work with.

New standard roof saves me $2k/year. Fortified Bronze looks like an additional $1k savings.

If Pelicans rep is right, the additional cost may only be $3-4k out of pocket. That’s a fast break-even in my mind.

I’ll post along the way if it helps folks.

Ah sorry, my original comment was based thinking that you were working with the grant. I got lucky and received approval for the grant yesterday and now I have to select 3 contractors for bid. Curious how this plays out.

I had my roof replaced i September. I had them do 100% tearoff to have clean decking. 100% Ice and Water on the roof. I used Atlas pinnacle pristine shingles with scotchguard. Total job was $40k. The upgrade from synthetic underlayment to the ice and water was $8k or $115 per square.

I appreciate the info for sure! The google machine last night suggested a bit over $100/square for water and ice

They charge more to tear off to a clean deck for IW application. Normally they don't do 100% tear off anymore for a roof replacement.

Also my roof was more expensive in general due to the very steep roof pitch.

Which round of the grant were you in? Im in 2100 range and havent heard anything.

Thanks. I really appreciate it. I'm kind of figuring it out as I go. I do like that the better shingles now seem to be algae resistant. Sounds like Pelican uses Atlas Pinnacle Prestine and it touts a lifetime no-black streak/algae warranty.

I also figured out this morning that the certification is 3rd party. I was concerned that I had to get Farm Bureau to coordinate and inspect as they were doing the roof. Makes a lot more sense now.

Yea pretty much all shingles worth a grain of salt offer the mildew proof warranty. Atlas however is only one that is tied to scotchguard. For 15 years it’s 100% covered. After that, it’s covered but depreciated.

Also, there’s something special that needs to be done on Atlas shingles in their valleys.
