The X-Men were created in 1963; the same year as the March on Washington.

“I loved that idea,” Lee told the Guardian in 2000, as the first X-Men movie hit theaters. ”It not only made them different, but it was a good metaphor for what was happening with the Civil Rights Movement in the country at that time.”

So completely unrelated to politics; I decided to watch the original with my boys since the theme song was stuck in my head all day. My 8yo just wanted to play Roblox instead but the 5yo loved it and we're going to binge more tomorrow.

Sorry I'm not disputing that the civil rights fight wasn't a thing when X-Men created but the whole civil rights allegory thing is revisionist history. Stan Lee never started saying that until later in his life. There are interviews where he says point blank the X-Men were created so they did not have to come up with back stories for their powers.

The March on Washington happened August 28, 1963.

X-Men #1 came out September 1963.

i'm not saying it's impossible... but impractical. Comics took months on months to go from drawing to editing to publication to distribution back then.

The comparisons to civil rights came well after.

The original answer of X-Men were made as mutants to avoid having to avoid doing back stories from the 60s and 70s is the answer.

Not opposed to any political messages either way, just pointing out revisionist history
