It depends on what you value more...if you want a beach vacation with some history and culture thrown in, stay out that way. If you value the history and culture and all that comes with it, stay closer to downtown and head out to the beach one day.
Though I would say for those who are looking for mostly a beach vacation, you can achieve that for a lot less elsewhere than the Charleston area and its 4 beach islands.
