I wanted to be called Pop also. As my grandson started to make sounds I was constantly trying to get him to say PPPop.
When he was ready, he tried so hard to say Pop, but his P's came out as B's. So instead of Pop...it was Bob. And it was so precious I have been renamed Bob.
All my family calls me Bob now. I love it.

I need a grandfather name and want something non-traditional.
Of course.
Just make something up, that seems to be what your peers are doing.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the weird shite people ask to be called as grandparents. "Let's go see your gee-gop and dee-dee!"
Reminds me of this bit I saw when Jason Alexander (George Costanza from Seinfeld) became a grandpa. He and his wife wanted to be called "J-Pa" and "Day-Ma". Watch how that turned out:

Ideally, it needs to be organic/impromptu.
When my older brother was a toddler, he was told to call for "grandmaw". But he couldn't pronounce grandmaw. It came out as "Ganda". The adults all laughed and they got a kick out of telling him to go see "Ganda". Even she would joke, "Come to Ganda." The joke continued, the name stuck, and I grew up knowing my grandmother only as Ganda.
Flash forward to my mother anticipating becoming a grandmother after my sister got pregnant, Mom said, "I think I want a unique nickname. I think I want to be called 'Mims'." I said, "Nah, Ma, it's gotta be organic. I mean, what is the baby gonna call dad? Pims?" The all laughed. 33 years later, my nephew only knows my parents as "Mims & Pims".

I'm Paw-Paw. Pops would work for me too.
Aabuelo or Papito if you're Hispanic or maybe even if you're not.
Sofu is Japanese for Grandpa I believe.
My Ex-wife's family called her grandfather on her mom's side Big Daddy but they were hillbillies from Tennessee.
Opa is the German word for grandfather.
Here is a list I found online of other languages. Note the Japanese term is different from what I have above. From what I read the term below is what is typically used to refer to another person's grandfather but it is the internet so who knows.
Abuelo (Spanish)
Avô (Portuguese)
Babu (Swahili)
Daada/Nana (Hindi)
Dedushka (Russian)
Dziadek (Polish)
Grand-père/Pépère (French)
Halabeoji (Korean)
Jaddi (Arabic)
Kakek (Indonesian)
Lolo (Tagalog)
Nonno (Italian)
Ojiisan (Japanese)
Ong Noi (Vietnamese)
Opa (German)
Oupa (Afrikaans)
Thakurda/Dadu (Bengali)
Tutu Kane (Hawaiian)
Yéyé (Mandarin)
Zeyde (Yiddish)
