For anyone interested, check out the book "One second after" that focuses on the aftermath of an EMP going off over North America and what comes next after the electrical grid gets shut down. The story takes places in Appalachia. The mountains of Western NC specifically.
One of the angles discussed in the book is the pressure on wildlife after an event like that takes place. After 6 months of over hunting to survive, we'd be lucky to see a squirrel in some areas as wildlife numbers would be pushed to near zero.
Every Tom Dick and Harry in every square of inch the country would be fishing and hunting to try and put food on the table. Nature can only take so much with how large our population is before it has nothing else to give. Very eye opening book.
Keep In mind the South East is now the most populated region of the country by a significant margin. The days of our grand fathers and great grandfathers with low population numbers in the south are long gone. Thanks largely to great weather and an affordable cost of living relative to other regions.
