Some of them are just extended warranties. Other protection plans they try to sell them cover things like lost key fobs, cosmetic damage to seats, paint chips etc, things that wouldn't necessarily be covered under just a factory warranty.

Some sort of GPS bullshite they say is used to protect cars in their own lots. It was 2k on an suv I was looking at. Fought and fought to get them to remove that line item. Went to a competitor and they didn’t use that service so no extra bullshite.

I’d forward that crap to the sales manager along with a statement that dealership is off limits to you and your cash and you will be telling everyone that listens about that crap.

sales manager probably told him to do this.

car dealerships are in a world of hurt.

they purchased new and used car at too high of a price. and they are not going to sell them at a loss.

some will go out of business before giving in.

the car buyers are out there telling the dealers to screw off.

It's stuff like this that makes me want to go to dealerships on Saturdays in the middle of the summer with zero intentions of buying a car just to waste their time.

This is a level of pettiness I live for

Me too. I'll go when it's hot as hell. I'll go when it's cold and rainy. Test drive, crunch numbers, and then tell them "no thanks."

Harassing potential customers doesn’t seem like a great sales strategy. I hope you never buy a vehicle from those assholes.

That $29k truck is $37k out the door after fees and a $4k protection plan? I said take that off and they tell me it's impossible and company policy. I tell them to kick rocks. Next day same thing on a different truck. When did this become a thing? It's like car dealerships invent ways to make people hate them more.

That is probably because the protection plan is 50% profit for the dealer selling you the plan.

It is a piece of paper that says the protection plan may cover a problem if something happens mechanically to vehicle as long as the manufacturer warranty is expired and you have not reached the protection plan expiration in miles or days covered. The reason why I say MAY is because if all of those boxes are checked for the protection plan to cover then they start examining if you had your oil changed and other recommended maintenance to cover the claim. Then the protection plan company will probably even try to negotiate down the mechanic shop or dealer.

My favorite is that mechanical problems always happen a few thousand miles after those plans expire.

So if you drive a lot those plans are worthless. You would be better off putting 3-4 thousand in the bank ready to pay for a major mechanical repair or maintenance.

There’s a big difference between a “protection plan” and Mechanical Breakdown Insurance.

The first is a scam. The second is a legal contract regulated by state department of insurance.

Do your homework. Neither are legal warranties.

After trying to convince me on why i did i finally said dude. Take it off. He walks away and comes back and says his boss said he won't sell me the car without it. I said frick off

At that point I think I’d be like “look, go talk to your manager and find out how much it’s going to cost me to get this shite removed.”

They’re mandating it as a way to hide some extra profit. Fine. But surely it’s not 100% profit for the dealership. There has to be some middle ground where it makes the sale worthwhile for them without you wasting $4k on useless shite.

was in the sales office so long with this and that thrown at me by the time it was over all I wanted was to leave. I'm sure they do this on purpose.

First time I bought a car exact same thing happened to me. They completely bamboozled me and I was too worn out and naive to fight it. Walked out the dealership with a knot in my stomach.

Next day I got an attorney friend to write them a letter threatening action if they didnt let me out of the contract. Not only did they let me out, but the GM hand delivered me a $200 "I'm sorry" check. Was basically hush money.

FYI, that was the Honda dealership in Slidell right across the twin span if you ever go. Not sure if they've changed practices, but the finance lady was a fricking wolf.

If it was law you had to come up with 30% down payment the poors would quit fricking everyone with money.

Federal banking law on vehicle lians should be 30% minimum 36 month maxixmum. If you cant afford it you cant buy it.

One of the many reasons dealerships are fricking awful. They’re always looking for ways to frick people over.

Least favorite experience was car shopping.

You feel dirty as hell afterwards.

As a F&I manager, it's illegal for me to sell "warranties." I do sell a mechanical breakdown policy though. Along with GAP, Tire and Wheel, pdr and fob replacement. I'm Louisiana, f&I are legally bound to offer GAP to any customer above 70% LTV.
Most new car limited warranties are 3years/36000 miles. Typically, in the real world, that's really only about 2 years and a couple months of coverage, we average 15k miles per year in MS and LA. I always offer a 5 yr 75000 policy and can adjust those numbers to fit different customers. With the prices of parts and labor steadily increasing, about 85% of my chances buy the policy. It can cover 2 repairs and be worth all the money. It's fitting an extra $50-60 a month in to your budget vs having to come out of pocket thousands of dollars for a repair at one time.

he couldn't come off his number that much. Text me a week later to let me know he sold the truck at full price and I said "congrats, let me know if you come across anything else you think I'd be interested in".

He responds with "maybe next time you won't ask me to come off $3k on asking price". I told him "well you guys had no problem asking people to come up $9k during covid so what's the difference?" No response
jeez massive douche this sales guy is. He really texted you to brag about selling to someone else

This is illegal. The optional equipment is just that, optional. It’s a deceptive trade practice and the reason why CARS rule was enacted and goes into effect next summer.

So what is that product that all dealerships offer me in the finance office that they try to sell me that is said to be an extended warranty?
