I think those three wins matter.
St Mary's had a win at 13th-ranked Gonzaga and beat a good BYU team twice in the regular season before falling to them in the conference tournament. That is a better win than VCU.
I am not sure any Southland team has ever had an at-large bid since the advent of the automatic bid for the conference tournament winner. I am also not sure any Southland team has been as good as this McNeese team going into the conference tournament and not won.
