When it's everything but the physical elements. Texting constantly every day, sending good morning & good night texts, talking about emotional shite, sharing good news / venting about bad news, etc
People in emotional affairs are basically designating the replacement partner in waiting. Once the relationship ends, it's the person they'd immediately go frick.
I know it sounds stupid, but I've been on the wrong end of one and it sucked arse.

I was going to say emotional affairs are almost always where physical ones start too. Virtually every couple I've ever worked with that had infidelity it started with an "emotional affair".
