Why is Trout's WAR so much higher?

Much higher on base percentage. Much better defender. Much better base runner.

Also the majority of Trout’s career was spent in a lower offensive environment

Trout leads in Runs Created, but the margin is much closer.

Belle has a negative value in fielding and baserunning.

WAR favors people who walk a lot and it also favors center fielders over corner outfielders because it operates on the assumption that up the middle players … catcher, shortstop, second baseman, center fielder … are more valuable than corner players.

The latter is my problem with the metric although I think it’s a valid metric. The thing is, it measures value not “who’s better,” and I don’t think the two are necessarily synonymous, but baseball fans can’t avoid discussing who’s better, it’s in their DNA.
