95+% are silver plate. They've been silver plating for hundreds of years.
Look on the backside of a piece... google the brand/style or whatever is on the back.

a couple months ago I went through the wives, mothers silver service , about 25 pieces and found indeed that the vaunted valued silver we had been maintaining the last 35 years was indeed Hamilton silver plate worth about 10 bucks a piece on eBay. There is no intrinsic silver value unless it has a stamp "Sterling". In the 1950 through 1970 period there was a ton of plate produced for Boomers going upscale. No body really wants the plated service today because of informal dining
