Why go to HSV or BNA when ATL is right down I-20 and will give you the widest/cheapest selection of flights?

Yeah, OP, you are not thinking clearly about this at all. You can fly nonstop to all these destinations from ATL on Delta, Southwest, and Frontier.

ATL is 2 hours and 20 minutes away from you. You will save far more than that time in the air, because you won't have to connect.

Your life will be less stressful, because you won't have to make a connection and worry about what happens if bad weather makes you miss your connection and you get stranded in some random airport for the night.

And you'll save money.

You could fly Delta June 7-11 nonstop from Atlanta to Cancun for $400 per person roundtrip.

You could stay at the Grand Palladium Colonial Playa del Carmen for $226 per room, per night. I've stayed at this resort and liked it very much. (I actually had a room in the White Sands part of the resort, and that's $358 per night, but that's a huge room that you don't really need.) The Grand Palladium was a great all-inclusive, and I really enjoyed the food and activities. There were lots of great restaurants to choose from.

So, now you're at $3600, and all you need to pay for is the taxi or other transfer to and from the airport (let's say that adds a total of $150). You're on a great resort with lots of fun stuff to do, but maybe you want a snorkeling tour, or your wife wants a spa treatment (the spa there is quite nice), or you want to go swim in a cenote, or you want to go visit Mayan ruins, so you'll need a few hundred more for that stuff.

Done. Your total is right at $4000, plus the gas to drive from your home to ATL, and the cost of your passports, which you should get immediately. And this is a great vacation! I've done this resort and had a wonderful time.

Are you a Costco member? I just checked Costco travel from BHA from June 17 - June 21, 2 rooms, 2 adults, 2 kids to Cancun (its Mexico, but easiest to look for).

I found several all-inclusive packages ranging from 4.4K to 6K on those dates. There was a Planet Hollywood (haven't been there but generally has good reviews and family friendly) package with United flights out of BHA for $5,410.23, airport transportation to/from resort, 2 junior suite rooms, a $120 costco gift card. Have to be a Costco member to check but might be worth $60 membership.

Also this is just one option, but it does fit your budget and timeframe.

One note, I picked this one as an example because you have 2 children. Re-read and saw they are college age, there are other good options to choose from that are still all age-inclusive, but might be more fun for them. Also the previous post provided a good option, but for your first Caribbean trip a package that includes everything, including transportation, might be easier to deal with unless yall are experienced international travelers.

I've spent a decent amount of time in DR.

I wasn't referring to excursions.

Have you been to Puerto Rico?
I have been interested in maybe planning a trip. Do you have any info to share on places to stay, things to do, is it worth going?

I have been to PR twice.

San Juan and east side of island once, west side of island another time.

Very cool place. Rainforests, Caves, beaches, bio bays, etc

Many very cool things to do.

And you can take a ferry or quick ride to the islands of Culebra or Vieques which are both amazing

would you recommend one part of the island to be better to visit?

That’s not true. We did 2 of our favorite excursions in DR! One was a combined zip line and cigar making tour and the other was an atv beach tour.

In fairness, I read it as he meant nothing like "in town" to do. Shopping, bars, restaurants, walking around, etc. Things you'd do to get a taste of a locals experience at least to some degree.

Excursions to me are more of a tourist resort/cruise ship thing and they seem to set them up anywhere in the world they're able to.

BHM happens to be the closest airport, but reason for favoring BNA over ATL is about an hour's difference in drive time from my part of the world. But you guys have me considering ATL options, as well as Cancun. Thanks for all the great advice and detailed options that have been researched and offered.

STX.

Stay at Hotel on the Cay. Rooms are very basic, but cheap, like $150/night. It's an island 150 yards off of the island. Ferry runs every 5 minutes all the time.

Wonderful beach and snorkeling from the island and only 150 yards from Christiansted and most of the shopping on STX. Walking distance to some very, very good restaurants.

There are scuba shops and boat excursions that run out of Christiansted. Buck island beach is incredible. A whole day excursion on one of their sailing catamarans with snorkeling and rum punch and lunch on a private beach is only $100/pp.

No need to rent a car unless you want to get to other parts of the island. There is a rental place within walking distance if you do want to rent. Car rentals are pretty expensive, but you can see a lot in a day.

Damn. St. Croix. is another place I’ve flown into that I need to add to the other thread.

There are some very good restaurants on St. Croix. Beer drinking pigs on top of the mountain. Some nice beaches and La Rein Chicken Shack.

As popular as it is, I could never get behind chicken shack.

There are plenty of decent to nice beaches, you can have one to yourself if that's what you want. Sandy Point is gorgeous, but always has people.

Duggans, Too Chez, and Savant are my favorites, but there are so many others that are good. Lots of good casual places too.

Is Sandy Point the beach in the national park with the turtle refuge? Beautiful but serious rules about times open, umbrellas, etc if that’s the one I’m thinking of.

It is. They filmed the ending of Shawahank there, it's beautiful.

It's only open on weekends part of the year. Nothing that sticks in the sand is allowed because of turtle nests.

Softest and deepest sand I’ve ever walked in. I love to walk on beaches and that one was a workout.
