The goal is to make the kennel their own place within a place. The house is the den, the kennel is their own personal den within a den. If you do it right, they love their kennel. They won't see it like a cage or prison cell. You'll say "go lay down" and the dog goes right in, happily. When the dog wants to lay down, it goes into the kennel by itself, of its own volition, without even being commanded. While a human sees bars and a prison cell, the dog thinks "this is my personal space" and the dog charishes it.

Especially when they are puppies putting a blanket over it tends to calm them, though it freaks some pups out because they don't feel connected to the rest of the pack.
