It's a great song with an awesome story and just as great a story about the writing of it.

Hank started writing it when he was in jail at Our Town, Alabama, which is the next little town over from Kowaliga, Alabama.
Hank was already a big star, but he tended to be a pain in the arse locally. He had a place on Lake Martin and spent a lot of time around here.
The wooden Indian was for real, but the original was stolen after the song was a hit.
Fred Rose changed the name of the song to Kaw Liga for whatever reason.
All of this happened about 5 miles from where I am right now.
There is a replacement Indian at the restaurant at the marina, but I've heard rumors about where the original may be.
If they are true, I hope that Indian ends up in the Smithsonian one day.
