Like others have stated, doing the promotional thing is the way to go. I did one a while back where it was something like $4/month for the next 12 months. Then I cancelled the subscription before the regularly monthly charge was going to kick in.
Within a month or two of cancelling, another promotion like that popped up in my email box, so now I’m back on, until the full price kicks in again.

This is what I did. WSJ is one of the monthly media subscriptions the AmEx platinum card will give you credit. I had about $4/month of the credit I wasn’t using so essentially got it free. I like it but probably won’t keep it when it goes up to pay regular price.
