That wouldn’t be an issue. Just trying to wrap my head around the logistics. My boys like the outdoors but long travel times for them will be a bummer.

I get that. I guess kids don't enjoy scenic drives as much as we geezers. Maybe some posters with kids will chime in tomorrow. My opinion is unless you are doing back country camping then 2 days is plenty in the park and doing a couple of drives is ok.
A star party at McDonnald observatory is cool. The Chihuahuan Desert Research Center outside Ft Davis has a couple of good 1.5 hr hikes.
