He volunteered to go kill people, when his father could have kept him home. He was a war hero because he thrived in deadly situations. He volunteered to murder a cop. It wasnt much of a transformation. That was who he was. He was just subdued by his father, once dad wasnt calling the shots, he simply shattered everyones misconceptions about him

Yeah, it really was. Because as much as Michael liked to tell himself that killing Sollozzo and McCluskey wasn't personal...it was. Sollozzo tried to have his father killed, McCluskey punched him in the face. The Japanese were just random people who stood against him and coming home. They were faceless, nameless people. Sollozzo and McCluskey were anything but. It's like Sonny told him when he first proposed the idea: "This isn't the army where you shoot 'em from a mile away. You get right up close and budda-bing you blow their brains out all over your nice, Ivy League suit."
