Eh… they would have to make massive changes to the budget in some fashion if they lost that money, so it is technically true. Them being able to do it and them being willing to do it are separate matters.

What they need to do is start by dismantling the consolidated city-parish government. It’s something that both the NAACP and St. George agree on.

Absolutely this.

The crux of this whole tax issue is the comingling of EBR Parish and City of BR budgets.

What should happen is:

St George keeps a portion of their tax dollars, and in exchange, has to provide a portion of government services. So EBR parish loses revenue, but also cuts expenses.

What actually happens because of consoidated goverment is:

Consolidated EBR / City of BR loses tax dollars, but the tax dollars they are losing is more than the expenses that will be cut.

This is a huge complaint for the St George people... that they are funding more than the services they are getting.

And the city of BR people are saying... you are completely correct... tough titties, we need the money more than you do.

I think that has been the long play all along. Central, Zachary, Baker incorporating was easier because they already had fire and police in place. Maybe St George needs to start up a police force.
