The chances were extremely minute, but I can't fathom not going ahead and calling them in a playoff game down by 3 in a torrential downpour. Anything could have happened in that weather.

This. With a second-year QB taking the snap. If they’re trying to run out the clock, your job is to stop it as many times as possible. You make them execute every snap.
