Herb's Improved Finishing

We've talked about the improvement in Herb's 3-pt shooting, but I don't think there's been a lot of discussion about how improved he is at the rim. This is really the first year that I've wanted to see Herb take someone off the dribble and try to get to the rack, as his Eurostep is now elite.
BBall Index just highlighted this. Herb's improvement at the rim is top-3 in the league:
If you're struggling with the graphic, it's showing a distribution, where the zero line represents the league average. You can see that Herb was significantly below the league average last season in this metric at -0.46 and is now above average at +0.14.

He’s been so efficient this year. Up to 61% TS. 37.7% on 3s on the highest volume of his career. I’ve noticed that he’s been automatic from the corners. He swishes it almost every time from the corner.
I would like to bump the 3P volume up a little more. Push him closer to 5 3PAs per game

Only gripe about Herb is I wish he was a better rebounder. Him grabbing 5-6 rebounds per game would help a lot

Knowing Herb and how he busts his arse to improve his game, he’s capable of doing that but is working on his shooting for now.
Rebounding would be great but having him be a defensive monster and a non-liability shooting, let alone a good shooter, takes precedence

Coupla things on Herb rebounding #s. On offense Herb is our most important "get back" guy. He will seldom go all the way to the hoop to try for an offensive rebound. Few years ago, analytics told NBA teams that stopping the initial transition offense of their opponents was a huge factor. Just get an initial stop of opponent's transition offense & then, set up & play solid halfcourt defense.
So, they tend to try & keep their best "get back" guys in position to hopefully be the first ones "back". Herb basically just fills the "long rebound slot", maybe 15' or so from the hoop and is basically already headed down the court, but can still get the occasional missed 3 that results in the long slot rebound opportunity. CJ, for example, seems quite adapt at filling this "slot".
On defense...Herb is often guarding their best threat so he's seldon in position to grab rebounds. When he's playing "off-ball" defense...he mainly concentrates on boxing out HIS man...and often, is content to just let the rebound hit the floor once he's sure his man can not get it. Some of our other rebounders are more than happy to snatch these easy, often uncontested rebounds up.
Sorry for the length of this...but that's just my opinion. I could be wrong and may just making up stuff...as an excuse... for Herb's relatively low rebounding stats.

Solid improvement in that area by Herb, this season. But still has much room to improve...which he will. Gotta learn to use body to stop so many blocked shots AND gotta learn to make more passes after penetrating close to the rim...to open guys...EVEN all the way back out to the 3-pt line. He is still trying to develope an "auto-pilot" when he goes to the hoop but until he does...he has to make all these decisions in a split second...and that's a learning process that just takes time. He'll get better at it.

Yeah, but Dyson plays a similar role on defense and is an outstanding rebounder for us. I think it's fair to say that rebounding is just not a skill at which Herb currently excels.

Good point. I've noticed Dyson has much more freedom to crash the offensive board...and does a very good job of it. I can't wait until both players develope to the point we can have them both on the court...at the same time...and that day is coming...sooner than most folks think. I've been trying to concentrate a bit more on Dyson during games recently. JMO...he is a key player in the Pels future success.

I get the rebounding complaint; but schematically if he always guards the other team’s #1 then he would stay with that guy even after a shot goes up, so as not to get out of position in case of an offensive rebound. Another way to say it would be you don’t ever leave Steph or Luka, not even to rebound.

Absolutely this; you said it much better

Just watching the games( eye test),
I’ve been amazed at Herb’s drives and finish at the rim. Plus timely rebounding. His game has improved all around.
