Have you ever noticed how there are generally over 100 kids on the roster but only 85 scholarships? How do you think those guys get on the roster?
Every school has a target number for their roster, they fill that number through walk-ons. Most of them never do anything but participate in off-season practices and the occasional in-season or bowl practice. Most don't even ever travel to road games.
There are always a few preferred walk-ons and a few others who just want to be on the team so they seek out the route to walk on and do it themselves without prompting. For the rest, this is how they are made aware of and obtain a walk-on roster spot. Every school does this in one way or another.
