why do people keep repeating this idiotic statement?
yes, we quit producing the parts we used to go to the moon 50 years ago. when we go back to the moon, we will not use the same parts/technologies we used 50 years ago.
how is this so hard to understand? it's how technology works.

You have more computing power in your hand right now than the Apollo program had in total.
I dont want to oversimplify this, because it's still the greatest feat in human history. It's a physics problem, and it's easily solved today.
What we don't have is the wide open checkbook of the USA, a contender who we need to beat to it, and the thrill of the unknown.
We've been there, done it, won the race, kissed the cheerleader, etc. We just don't want to bad enough anymore. That's literally the only reason we haven't gone back. It's expensive af, and we see no need to go kick moon dust with human feet anytime soon.

Yes and no. While we spend "a lot" of money on NASA these days, that's heavily inflated currency. As a percentage of the federal budget, spending is way down compared to the run up to the moon:
For context, the federal outlay in 2023 was $6.1T. If we spent 4.5% of that on NASA, that would be $275.5 billion per year.
ETA: For those curious, that roughly $6B spent in 1966 would be worth roughly $57B today.

So 1/2 of what we sent to Ukraine?
We could have built the southern border wall, eliminated our homeless problem and went to the moon with change in our pocket for less than we sent to Ukraine.

I didn't say we couldn't afford it. If it were up to me, federal spending might be in the billions. I was responding to a post describing the problem as bureaucratic, which I interpreted as directed at NASA. I was simply pointing out that we were throwing a tremendous amount of money at NASA during the space race.

I'll push back on this a little. Back then, NASA wouldn't have hired many minorities, regardless of merit. Otherwise, I agree that the best person for the job should always be hired.
It's why I hate comments like the second post in this thread. The Hidden Figures ladies didn't need DEI or affirmative action. They earned it, but they're constantly the subject of ridicule.

Have you seen the clip of Buzz Aldrin on Conan ?
Conan said "I remember my parents waking me up and we went down and watched you guys land on the moon".
Buzz replied "No you didn't, you watched animation. There wasn't any television, there wasn't anyone taking pictures".
If you look at their time on the moon it's pretty amazing how short they were there. It was basically proving they could land, place/grab stuff from the ground, and then launch/dock.
I think my generation was the last to have the desire to be an astronaut. I think a lot of that ended with Challenger. I find the history fascinating but after the first SpaceX launch/return to the ISS, if Jesse isn't doing the commentary I don't pay all that much attention anymore.
