As others have said, prepare for sticker shock with Thule and Yakima... but they're also the best and most aerodynamic.

I generally get into mine by opening the doors to the car and standing on the floormat. If I need to get higher, one foot on the seat and one foot on the open door armrest.

They're extremely nice to have. A cheaper option for getting stuff out of the cab is a hitch basket with good storage containers and ratchet strap them on. But that's not secure if you're leaving your vehicle anywhere for any amount of time.

Spend the money on a Thule. I ran one for 10 years on a mini van. Then sold it for $300.

I had the wide one that you could open from both sides. Very handy. Surprisingly easy to take on/off.
