I mean Underhill’s article literally says they can.

quote:

Previously, before this move, Lattimore counted as $25 million against the cap. This move makes it easier to carry him on the roster until June 2, at which point he could be traded and the team could split the charge over two seasons. The dead-money hit would be the low teens in 2024 and about $20 million in 2025. Those numbers are very manageable.

It also makes it slightly less expensive to just make an outright trade before June 2 than it would have if the team used a signing bonus as part of this deal.

They’d still tank a serious dead cap hit but it sounds like, from what Nick is implying in his articles and in his podcasts, along with Duncan’s recent article, there’s some perhaps irreversible damage to the Lattimore/Saints relationship that could end in a trade. Personally, I’d rather keep Lattimore period but it does sound like it’s certainly possible he’s moved.

That's why we can't do it. We are still like 50M over the 2024 cap and that would add 20-30M to it.

That's why we used the option bonus. We are essentially designating him as a June-1 trade (which you can't legally do like cuts, but the option effectively accomplishes the same cap relief...just that we can't trade him until then)
