Your list contains some good quarterbacks. It was just a different time back then.

Burrow was nice but QB play immediately dropped off after he left. Kelly is the one who established this reputation and he did it with the improvement of Daniels from last year to this year culminating with the Heisman.

In the modern recruiting era, roughly correlated to the BCS era, here are the best QB prospects, by their profiles at the time of their recruitment, from Louisiana (not listing the two Mannings in that time period as it’s pretty clear no Manning was ever going to wear the purple and gold, and this is a discussion about LSU’s access to home grown talent at the position)
1. Ryan Perilloux
2. Brock Berlin
3. John David Booty
4. Walker Howard
5. Brandon Harris
6. Robert Lane
7. Lowell Narcisse
8. Dak Prescott
9. Jordan Jefferson
10. Lester Ricard
(Myles Brennan could basically be considered home grown for the purpose of the thread, and he would be probably ranked somewhere in that 8-10 range as a recruit)
The idea that LSU could have built a powerhouse program focused on the passing game with this list of home grown prospects over a 25 year period is kind of comical.
Dak is easily the most successful of the group, and he was barely even considered a QB prospect by any schools other than MSU until very late in the process.
It was clear then, and has been proven to be true to this day, that if LSU wanted to build a successful passing centered attack, we would have to recruit nationally at the quarterback position to do it.
All due respect to my guy Marcus Randall, but Jordan Jefferson has been the most successful LA raised QB for LSU of the modern era. Perilloux obviously would have taken this title pretty easily had he been able to stay in the program.
Every other QB that has had any sort of success in Baton Rouge has been brought in from outside of Louisiana.
Rohan Davey
Matt Mauck
Jamarcus Russell
Matt Flynn
Jarrett Lee
Zach Mettenberger
Anthony Jennings*
Danny Etling
Joe Burrow
Max Johnson
Jayden Daniels
Garrett Nussmeier
*- had “success” in that he was the QB when LSU won games that he started
If anyone can think of LA QB recruits that had success at the college level that I’m forgetting, please remind me
ETA: went back and looked at rankings, and I forgot three more recent recruits that were fairly highly rated prospects, as I don’t follow as closely as I used to.
Justin Rogers, Keytaon Thompson, and Eli Holstein.
Holstein was a blue chipper but obviously hasn’t done anything yet, and is now transferring.
The other two did little in college, with both ultimately transferring out of the schools they committed to, and KT switching to WR at UVA, where he did have some success.
Would have been interesting to see what KT could have done had Mullen stayed at MSU, as he flashed potential in the one year they were there together. Mullen likely saw a lot of the same things he saw in Dak that few others did coming out of high school.

To be fair, Myles and Max both had some success throwing the ball, although their numbers didn’t tell the whole story, and the offense and overall team performance dropped dramatically.
But you’re right, seeing Jayden’s progress, not only from year 1 to 2 in BR, as I think he was pretty damn awesome in year 1 as well, but seeing the progress from Tempe to BR is what really stands out to me.
Burrow, even though he didn’t play at OSU, was pretty clearly given a very solid foundation of coaching under Urban Meyer and the staff in Columbus. (I’d argue that was actually the primary reason for the success he’s gone on to achieve, in addition to his innate instincts, drive, and ability, but I digress )
So while it was great to see the staff in his time in BR identify his strengths and build an offense around him to take advantage of the skills he had, I do think he was mostly a finished product when he arrived, he just needed the opportunity to show it.
I have no doubt that had Burrow been given the chance to start at OSU in 2018 he would have had very similar success that we saw in BR.
Jayden, on the other hand, had been pretty clearly mismanaged and regressed under the coaching staff at ASU. He came in with a ton of talent and had some early success, but was not given quality coaching needed to improve on his abilities to really thrive at this level, and beyond.
That makes what Kelly and the staff did with Jayden even more impressive than what the staff did for Burrow imo, and will make recruits around the country take even more notice of what is happening in BR.

When two of yourQBs win the Heisman several years a part by setting all time FB collegiate records the HS QB are impressed. Joe Sloan is also a great QB coach and impresses not only the players but the families. If Underwood had not come to LSU the #2 QB from TN would have come he liked Joe Sloan so much.

It’s the craziest part of everything that’s happened these last 5 years. Seriously, TWO Heisman QBs? And all time great statistical seasons on top of that. Like, what?! At LSU??
It was just a few short years ago the fanbase would have killed for just a mediocre QB. It was the main complaint for what felt like ages. And now here we are, poised for even more top QB runs in the next few years. The truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.

Let’s not forget one of our greatest who tore the Irish a new arsehole and should have been a Heisman winner :
Bert Jones
Recognized as such in two articles in Sports Illustrated as I recall and still remember Bert’s greatest game in Tiger Stadium like it was yesterday even tho it’s been about 50 years: multiple touchdown passes to cousin Andy Hamilton in a 28-8 victory over Notre Dame. Far and away the loudest game in Tiger Stadium history even with a capacity at the time of just 70,000. SI ran a separate article on the stadium atmosphere called “The Noise”.
