They're trying to deceive the defense, which is the point of the game. And if the ref doesn't get confused the defense shouldn't be deceived anyway since the ref would tell them the correct lineman that is eligible.

The ref is supposed to inform the defense and announce over the PA who is eligible. It’s an idiotic play from the Lions and it burnt them.
