As an IT guy, I've always wondered how these road side digital signs get hacked.
Do they hack the wireless transmission signals or do they walk up and plug in a laptop to change the message?

Not sure about these signs specifically, but having worked summers in road construction during my undergrad years I can say that 99.999% of everything you see either has the keys in it, is never locked, or if it has a code it’s written next to or under the keyboard.

In that erange box near the bottom of the pole is a keyboard to input what message that you want to be displayed. If you know the password you can write any message such as 'broom sucks donkey balls' . Usually the password is something dumb like 1234.

A large percent of the time devices like these are going to still have the factory default password.
