We used to play tackle football where both goal lines were literal concrete sidewalks, one of the sidelines was the street, and the other was the landscape shrubs up against one of the houses. It's a wonder no one was impaled by one of the shrubs, or knocked out cold on the concrete. There were plenty of skinned up knees and elbows though.

First time I tried out for baseball, age 9, I got cut. That was before pay , play and get a trophy days.

My mom saw the coach at church and he
told her I would pick up a dirt clod and when I caught a ground ball I would throw the clod to first base. He said I did this every day and he thought I needed to wait until next season to try out again.

We would play tackle football with 2 - 100 kids. A lot of times the ball carrier would be tackled by 30 kids, about half of them were supposed to be on the same team LOL.

Our neighborhood football field was our back yard. Concrete sidewalk for the north end zone, three to five foot drop off a retaining wall for the south end zone, west sideline was another five to seven foot drop off a retaining wall, northeast corner of the field had a chestnut tree that would shed needle-sharp burrs in the fall so no one wanted to get tackled there (or tackle anyone there), and the dog was usually tied out at the north end during a portion of every day so there was dog poop to avoid as well.

Still, it was fun as hell. Tackle football at full speed with no pads and no one cried or whined when they got tagged real good.

One place we played was a backyard where the house was one sideline, the goal line was about 3 feet in front of the carport, and there were several "hazards" on the "field." Pass patterns were "throw it into the gardenia bush and I'll dive into it," or "run T into the AC unit and cut left" or "run T into the rose bush and cut right."

This makes me lol and remember at one neighbors house the goal line was a yucca type bush that could drive a spiky leaf a 1/4 inch into soft tissue. We were smart about it though, we always played to the other side of the field and the yucca was only used during interceptions and fumble returns.
