It's lower key than the rest of the big city. There's a lot of food and drink options within the community. Regarding public transportation, there's cabs and ubers everywhere, however ubers are pricey compared to cabs and tram. We walked 18-20 miles per day when we went just walking around and to places. I understand that's not applicable with young kids, but try and adjust your expectations because life over there is more based on walking than riding. The walks are an experience themselves, and allow you to catch small lunch and gelato spots along the way. Walking a mile or two to a tram to go site seeing isn't unreasonable with a 6 year old.

ETA: I went on my honeymoon so it was just me and the wife. I have two kids now under 3, so my experiences didn't include kids. I completely understand anyone disagreeing with me
