Anyone use this? Do you use a small amount as an additive or a large amount as a stand alone?

don’t buy it
it’s full of other inorganic scraps, wood, rubber and other unidentifiable detritus

it used to be a good product but now it’s just a ripoff. worm casings are a much better storebought option

I’m sure local composted manure would be better, but I’ve had incredible results using it on my yard and in the garden.

Extremely hit or miss with the quality of each bag

All the wood chips and sticks are annoying as frick

I’ve also had some full of ants

That shite will take forever to decompose

This was my experience too in spring 2023.

I mixed 1/2 black cow composted manure w/ 1/2 topsoil for a raised bed and it was awful. Just poor products all around from the bags I got. Looked more like mulch.

I use it all the time and like it, never a bad bag. I mix it 50%/50% with mason sand.

someone better versed in soil science can tell you why, but you typically dont want to use compost/manure as a substrate. mix it in around 25% rate or so, but that particular pre packaged stuff doesnt have great reviews, for reasons above posters already listed.

If you read the back of the bag it says contains deconstructed forest products. It’s not soil, it’s mulch.

Worm castings aren't used because they provide any significant amount of nutrients, unlike composts. They're there for the biological side of the soil. It's not they aren't awesome, just likely not a straight up substitute for OP's issues. They'd absolutely be a dynamic duo. Just toss in some mycorrhiza and you're really cooking.

As for the OP what would you all recommend for him instead of the Black Kow?

Any locally sourced bovine based compost would suffice and probably be better than 2023 black kow. Nurseries or farms are where I'd look.

I've always added a couple of bags of Black Kow and Black Velvet mushroom compost to my beds every year along with other compost. No complaints.

I got a 7 yard load of composted cow and chicken manure delivered for 125 bucks from a local farm a few weeks ago

Black cow use to be great. Now it is crap just like all the other "top soil".
