Afghanistan was always going to be a quagmire. That being said, I’m of the opinion that we should have never left that base during the withdrawal.

Having a footprint in the region gives teeth to geopolitical conversations.

The problem is we have no way of getting it back realistically unless Pakistan wants to play ball. They have no incentive to do so unless we bribe the hell out of them. Then we get an airbase sitting alone that is incredibly expensive to supply (everything has to be flown in going through Pakistan and over much of Afghanistan) and will be a security nightmare. The only reason we would use the base is to start new military operations as well and since we don't control Afghanistan we will have to get the Taliban to agree. That is unless you want to go back to full scale war again.

It's a stupid, stupid idea and Trump went off teleprompter and just rambled it off. Problem is he never admits he makes a mistake and you have legions out there now trying to defend this stuff. I mean he might as well say he wants a base in Mongolia because it is strategically between Russia and China.
