I suggest taking up squirrel hunting. Can learn how to hunt and scout places you’re interested in deer hunting.

And it’s fun and they’re good eating.

This. Most WMAs in Louisiana also have hogs on them so you have the chance at those while squirrel hunting. It doesn't have nearly as steep of a learning curve as deer do so you'll be successful early on and won't get discouraged.
