An associate of mine tried everything. The only thing that helped him was ayahuasca. He is a church of Christ guy who's never touched a beer or cigarette in his life. He swears by controlled psychedelic therapy for his PTSD. He said he'd have killed himself without it.

my dad was a social worker at the VA for 40 years. Just from hearing him talk, group therapy is what seemed to help veterans the most. It's the isolation and feeling like nobody else understands is the worst. When he got a group of veterans together, they were able to feel like they weren't alone in this.

He has to want help. The VA is legitimately retarded. If he wants help he needs to see a civilian doc and send the bill to the VA.

The VA is trash, first and foremost he needs to find a group of veterans to talk. Secondly he needs to find a hobby that will allow him to escape.

I have PTSD and almost became one of the 22 a day years ago. The VA did nothing for me. I had to find an outlet, I found friends that went through the same thing, I found a hobby, most importantly I found another mission. Something that gave me purpose and direction that is rewarding. If you want I can give you my contact information and he can reach out. I was deployed in a combat zone for 122 months of my career throughout the Middle East. I’ve lived what he did.

Post to Reddit r/VeteransBenefits there are guys there that know the VA process very well and can offer best advice to get immediate care and reattack the PTSD claim. Bad C&P exams happen (they're usually contracted out to 3rd party) but he can refile or appeal and provide additional evidence including buddy letter from family, friends and those he deployed with. Contact a local VSO to assist w the process. VA care is a mixed bag but at least in my experience the docs have been more thorough and engaged than my military docs ever were but some clinics aren't as good. Ask for a "community care" referral if he prefers non VA provider. The care and claims side of VA are separate. The denied PTSD could stem from anything from a clerical error, bad examiner, increased symptoms since initial claim etc so don't let him give up on it because of initial denial. Also, many vets understandably don't feel comfortable pouring out their souls with a stranger and rehashing trauma thus without further evidence their claims get denied. Get ahold of the PTSD DBQ before follow up claim/appeal so he knows what they're looking for and he can mentally prepare for the tough questions.

ETA: As others have said don't wait for VA claim process which can take years. Seek care for him ASAP.

OP, he can't wait on the VA to help. I'm not military but I've had a history of PTSD with the fire/ems service. He needs to be taken to therapy, someone that has experience dealing with PTSD. His wife, like mine had to, has to be involved in getting him to go see one. I pushed it off for several years and regret that.

Make sure he isn't dealing with substance abuse to numb everything. I know there have been many military folks with PTSD who've had great success with having a service dog. You have to get his wife on board with all of this. Therapy, service dog, staying away from pills and alcohol.

If he wants help just pay cash for his sessions with a therapist. Piss on the VA. of course they said he doesn’t have PTSD, they don’t want to pay that disability check for the rest of his life.

True, OP, you can go to my thread I made a few months ago to gain some insight. Obviously get started on therapy and look into a service dog right away. In my thread there is other good information people shared, not just my OP. I'd stay away from buying shite online fwiw unless it's spores.

Of all the things for the VA to deny benefits for, if seems like PTSD would be one they’d take more seriously. If something ever happens with a bet suffering from it and it came out that he was denied benefits for it, that seems like a gigantic lawsuit. I wonder if there’s another VA-related avenue they could try (or try again). He’s definitely entitled to proper care.

I hope OP can find some relief within some of the avenues mentioned in the thread. I can’t imagine seeing my son suffer like that and feeling helpless to do anything about it. That’s an awful feeling. I hope things work out, OP.

Another thing to remember is that a diagnosis from the VA just secures benefits, it’s not the end of the world to not have it. But as many in this thread have stated there are avenues to work on that Diagnosis. The DAV is a great organization, find a VSO to help navigate the process.

But his care should happen NOW. This means find a civilian therapist that specializes in PTSD for combat veterans, plus the advice I mentioned earlier.

Something that may come into play for your son is drugs and alcohol. Keep an eye on his alcohol consumption. In the early days of my PTSD I turned to that for escape when all it did was make things worse for obvious reasons. Again my phone is always on and I am available 24/7 for a conversation with him or anyone else who is dealing with this. Just ask me for my contact info

All you need to do is look at how the Vets returning from the Vietnam War were treated by the US Govt, the people of the USA and the VA to get an idea about how quickly Vets can get sent away and told that they were unwelcome.

This group helps with vets by setting them up with equipment to go hiking with other vets I think this is a good organization to consider helping

Get a 2nd opinion. I know some who never saw combat that were diagnosed with PTSD (both female, so maybe that has something to do with it).

Very sorry to hear that.

There are several vets charities that exist to send the afflicted off "on scholarship" to legal psychedelic therapy retreats.

Here are the 2 most prominent:

Heroic Hearts

VETS

The healing rate at such places is quite high. I have direct experience with one of these. LMK if you need more info directly. Peace.

I’m sorry to hear this about your son. I’m not a vet so I can’t offer any real advice. All I can do is echo what has been said here. Have him get involved with other vets. Have him form a strong support network with other vets. Only other veterans truly understand what he has been through. Combat is one of those things no one can truly understand unless they’ve experienced it themselves. Keep us updated, please.
