I was working as a legislative assistant for Scalise at the time this happened. What a fricking shitshow. Total breakdown of chain of command. Could’ve saved American lives with a QRF out of Italy or Africa.
State department denied multiple requests for hardening of the consulate and marine detail before the attacks. They thought a 6 man DSS detail and local militia was sufficient to protect an ambassador in a country in the midst of a civil war.

I was on the MEU when it happened and was a member of the TRAP team. We got stood up and told to go in civies.. stood down.. stood up and told full gear.... stood back down.
