Friend,

That is a patently false and widely held assumption among people living along Metairie Road. Historically, that neighborhood was artificially cut off by I-10. Look at old maps and satellite images. Dorignacs is every bit as Old Metairie as is the new Langenstein’s.

Agreed. It was not always, but once they built the interstate that northern part of Old Metry became…well, it didn’t become anything, really. It just stopped being Old Metairie.

Winn Dixie is the southern border of Bucktown.

Nope. It can't stop being something. If the I-10 crossed over Royal Street, would Bourbon or Decatur no longer be the French Quarter?

I won’t argue with someone who wants to move the northern border from I-10, where I think it is, to vets. But to move it to West Esplanade is clownish. When I was a boy in the 60’s the area from vets to West Esplanade was a swamp. It definitely wasn’t Old Metairie. And old Bucktown folks would think you were nuts to suggest they lived in Old Metairie.

Friend,

Would you be willing to walk with me to Veterans Blvd and install in its neutral grounds several signs that read "Welcome to Bucktown" with an arrow pointing north and "Welcome to Old Metairie" with an arrow pointing south?

Yours,
TulaneLSU

P.S. Perhaps West Esplanade was a reactionary statement made in response to the restrictionists who somehow believe a late installation of a road can alter a neighborhood's historic boundaries. There are many examples in New Orleans where I-10 altered neighborhoods, but the neighborhoods' borders remained intact. The section of Lakeview south of 610, for instance, just west of City Park, did not suddenly become Mid-City because 610 was built. Same can be said for Treme and the overpass there.

Yes. Walls, railroad tracks and major roads do that.

Yes
Which one? Pick a side because that's what you're doing to Old Metairie.

So you agree with TulaneLSU and me. Good. Who said W.Esplanade? They were trolling.

You’re a fricking idiot. So by your borders, lakeside mall is old Metairie? Old Metairie north border is I-10. Go back to bullshitting your New Orleans “knowledge”.

This is why I like living in New Metry. I can wear a ratty t-shirt, gym shorts, and flip flops ad lib.

In New Metry, the best game to play is "Homeless or Millionaire?" They both dress the same here.

There aren't trains as well, which makes my trips to the chain restaurants easier.

Friend,

I would argue that the area bordered by Bonnabel, the 17th St Canal, West Esplanade, and Veterans is a grey zone, just as the area between Causeway and Bonnabel is. Bucktown and Old Metairie can both lay claim to this area, as it is not within either neighborhood's historic borders. It is not historically Bucktown. It is not historically Old Metairie, but an intermediary. It seems neither neighborhood has laid claim to it, so we will have to decide here. You seem quite upset by the discussion. We should gather a council, with Mother providing the hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies, where we can settle this matter once and for all.

Yours,
