Maybe Watts could read the Tea Leaves and knew the ship was headed for and iceberg. His official reason was that he only needed a few more years in the Michigan educational system to draw a good pension when he retired. He was close to retirement age.

Well, if that was the reason he gave it was probably crap. He was coaching college for several more years after that, and is still coaching today (albeit in high school in Oklahoma, apparently).

This wouldn't surprise me a bit. Those tea leaves were about 40 feet tall, spelling out "TEPPER SUCKS" in glowing neon letters.
