Used vehicle purchase and plates

I had a paper tag on a used car I bought recently and my Mexican buddy was asking me about it. Said “why do you buy the tag?” Told him I liked not getting fined or put in jail. Said “hell I’ve been driving driving this truck 2 and a half years no tag.”
