The Saints' offense is better off without Reggie Bush.

if sean didn't feel obligated to force the ball to reggie I'd say better with, but thats not the case...

FALSE

ETA: if used correctly, i think payton over thinks the way he uses reggie. we need a big back to compliment reggie. deuce 2006 and reggie in the backfield was an unstoppable force

I'll just give my reasons for saying true, based on watching the Saints offense the past couple of weeks without him.

1) The absence of bush forces Brees to throw the ball downfield more.

2) Too many Bush run/swing pass/punt return plays result in 0 or negative yards.

3) The emergence of Jeremy Shockey as a short pass option has made those Reggie Bush short passes obsolescent. Sure its high risk/reward and great when he breaks a catch for a lot of YAC, but a great majority of the time, like Ive already posted, too many of his plays result in <2, 0, or negative yardage.

4) Pierre Thomas > Reggie Bush when it comes to straight out running plays.

False but utilization is the key. I'd let Devery walk at make him the fulltime deep threat. He's got great hands.

true. I think thomas is a better player all the way around. he has shown the ability to run the ball, and he can catch just as well as bush, plus he doesnt fumble. payton seems to focus on getting bush the ball way too much. instead of focusing on throwing the ball so much to a rb that has a lower ypr than every wr on the team, why not throw to your wr's? just when you think he turned the corner returning punts he runs backwards on not just one, but both of his punt returns. im ready to move the guy to wr... I dont want him anywhere near the backfield. we didnt soend a 2nd pick to need a back to do his job(ugh, be a compliment) so that bush can run sideways trying to make a big play. this guy is getting paid big bucks, and he is being outplayed by a udfa. calculate the stats that thomas and stecker accumulated when bush was out the last two years, both guys put up way better stats than bush.

just fyi everyone, the restructuring on Bush's contract this spring makes 2010 the year when they can let him go or trade him for little or no cap hit. For another year you might as well root for him, like him or not.

How so?

Hasn't Thomas been FAR more consistent on offense than Bush?

Doesn't Thomas give us a legit running threat that Bush doesnt?

Don't you need to have some sort of a running game to be successful in the NFL???

I dont know how anyone could NOT answer YES to all of those questions.

Also over the last 2 seasons, Brees statistically plays better when Bush is out, that cant really be denied. Why? Because we have a running game. Run well, and teams have to watch for the run, and it opens up the pass.

I'm just not seeing how people don't see it this way.

True. A buddy of mine thats a Cowgirls fan said now that Bush is back Payton will try to run every play through him and lose the game. Also another guy I know that has season tickets said he couldn't believe how little Reggie was. Reggie walked beside him before one of the games and he stated I'm 5'8 and he is no taller than I am. I don't know if this is true but this is what I was told.

Is this a bad thing?

Shorter RBs tend to have better change of direction, balance, and foot speed.

Look at Quizz Rogers v. USC he's tiny and therefor none of the USC Defenders could square him up.

FALSE- Even though he has his mess ups (dropped balls, fumbles, losing yards) he is still a very dangerous player if he has a block or two and space.
