I think the point is that the end zone is the Defense’s space they are defending. If you lose it through their territory, you lose the ball.

That's dumb but if you had said that every fumble that goes out of play, I'd probably be OK with that. Or if a player is out of bounds when he touches a fumble, the ball goes to the opposing team. Sort of like a penalty for illegal touching but the nuclear version of the penalty
A live ball is a live ball, though, so let them battle it out.
