NFPA and NEC are both written, the former in large part and the latter almost entirely, by electrical contractors and electrical equipment manufacturers OR engineers with a vested interest in one or both making a profit. Everything they do is done with profitability in mind...public safety is nice, if you can get it, but making money, that's the objective. The people who write those 2 codes have increased the cost of installation far beyond what technology and inflation would have done over the last 30 years or so. They are out of control and they have NO REGULATION whatsoever. They actually make laws as unelected officials...laws that impact the lives of consumers directly and negatively. I have been on the NFPA NEC Council for years. I used to be very active in the organization until I realized what the actual agenda was and I lost interest.

Anyone who doubts this ask yourself how it is that an organization who has NO elected official present is the body who makes local laws and the organization in question nor the local authority having jurisdiction has ANY liability in relation to their actions as far as writing and enforcing requirements? Add the incentive to make their respective companies and employers more money and it is the perfect grift. All it takes for public buy in is a little low cost fear mongering and you are golden...you can dream up things like arc fault breakers and whole house surge arrestors and laugh all the way to the bank....
