We've got exactly the same situation, and per the NFPA those detectors must not be mounted more than 12" below the peak of the vaulted ceiling.

Who the hell wants to urgently climb to the top of a 12 Ft ladder and fidget with a 9v replacement battery to stop the constant beeping?

Getting too damned old for this.

I knew someone who died from a ladder fall, and another that was seriously injured and never was the same. I don't know anyone that died in a house fire. The NFPA rules are stupid for anyone living in the real world. Those barely reachable smoke detectors are not going back into service. I'll keep a few that are easily reached.

NFPA and NEC are both written, the former in large part and the latter almost entirely, by electrical contractors and electrical equipment manufacturers OR engineers with a vested interest in one or both making a profit. Everything they do is done with profitability in mind...public safety is nice, if you can get it, but making money, that's the objective. The people who write those 2 codes have increased the cost of installation far beyond what technology and inflation would have done over the last 30 years or so. They are out of control and they have NO REGULATION whatsoever. They actually make laws as unelected officials...laws that impact the lives of consumers directly and negatively. I have been on the NFPA NEC Council for years. I used to be very active in the organization until I realized what the actual agenda was and I lost interest.

Anyone who doubts this ask yourself how it is that an organization who has NO elected official present is the body who makes local laws and the organization in question nor the local authority having jurisdiction has ANY liability in relation to their actions as far as writing and enforcing requirements? Add the incentive to make their respective companies and employers more money and it is the perfect grift. All it takes for public buy in is a little low cost fear mongering and you are golden...you can dream up things like arc fault breakers and whole house surge arrestors and laugh all the way to the bank....

30 Year old house, 30 year old alarm system, 0 smoke detector problems in the house and 0 heat detector problems in the attic. Unless someone smokes up the kitchen.

Not sure of what you mean by the 9V lithium statement....and my SDs are nowhere near that cheap. I wish they were. It's more like $65 for a pack of 4. Problem is I have more than 12 SDs in my house. It's tremendous overkill. I wish I knew of a way to cover some of the holes up.
