What was the thinking behind going for the 63 yard field goal (into the wind) on that last play. I just cannot comprehend why you would call this play. Can anyone explain it to me, please?

I think the basic idea was that if our kicker could somehow get the ball to go through the goal posts, we would get three points, and win 33-31.
